Then to make sure you dont lose it and you will also find in that menu where it says 'lock tab to dock' Check it!

thanks for your help. after asking the question at the forum I researched if there was a way to reset without re-installing and found the solution. After following the reset instructions the tool options box started showing up again and I was able to change the added line spacing back to zero. Thanks again!

For the rest, learn about your Gimp profile. This is just a directory that you can backup/copy if needed.
