Ignore what I said above about creating a brush - just select the "Pixel (1x1 square)" brush NOT the "1. Pixel" brush. The "Pixel (1x1 square)" appears further down in the brush selection dialog and can be used for squares of 1, 2, 3, 4,... pixels - without getting the cross shape.
