I see a bit of editing going on while I prepared this, never mind, might help someone later.
Pixel Art? Are you working in an Indexed color space with a limited (black/ grays) colour map?
There is a way to use the mouse scroll wheel to adjust brush size. see: https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-using-vari...brush.html

Did you export as a grayscale, name.gbr otherwise the brush will not take the foreground colour.

The paint tool will affect the painted edge. Pencil is hard - no antialiasing. Paint brush has anti-aliasing and is smoother. Use the size slider to scale.
