Just to add to Ofnuts post.
This is a gradient saved as an SVG file. As a Gimp gradient it looks like the text on the left. As an SVG the text on the right.

You can open the SVG in Gimp as an image and there are tools to create a Gimp .ggr (gradient) file. The G'mic plugin is one of them.

Gimp .ggr gradient files are used elsewhere, Inkscape for example.
