To avoid the dark boundaries you will have to update to Gimp 2.10
The default settings in Gimp 2.10 avoid the problem. There is a drop-down in the tool options to revert back to (legacy) ie. the same as Gimp 2.8
What else? A overall linear mode set in the Image -> Precision
