removing tricky backgrounds ?
#1
Usually the 'color to alpha' or the fuzzy select tool work, but sometimes I cannot use those because of the similar values to the object and background, is there a tool I am missing?

As you can see the fuzzy select tool bleeds into the object Im trying to cut out.

There are lots of select tools and with that picture you may have to choose one that will not 'automatically' get rid of your background. Either. free select or the path tool then path to select, both which will take you longer or you could try a mask.
There is also the foreground select tool (Which you could invert the selection to get rid of the background) but that isn't fast either.

You can create a rough border around the object to remove most of the background. Then you can try to remove the rest with the 'select by color' tool. For the rest I usually use the 'eraser' tool and if you want to work in detail you can use the 'path' tool the Ofnuts way : https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-126-St...03-anchors

As previous posts all sorts of ways to get a better result.

The color select tool has a mask option that adjusts the threshold value as you drag the mouse in the image. That gives possibly a better selection. As a (partial) example this 20 second animation https://i.imgur.com/v3Fay38.mp4

The snag with that is it might remove color in the subject. For that, a tidy up using the quick mask is used to paint out any non-required selection. https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-using-quickmask.html

...and an animation of that https://i.imgur.com/TosyAnY.mp4
