  Blending and coloring
Posted by: BillG1955 - 07-07-2022, 05:33 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

I just switched to Gimp from Photoshop. I mainly use it to create 2D images of clothing which is then imported into a 3D engine for usage on avatars. I have gone through tutorials and feel I understand blending modes.

The one issue I have with Gimp is that for example I derive an outfit from let's say an image of a Red Dress. I want to make one that is Blue. So I create a new layer and use a foreground color of Blue. When the layer blends with the layer below the Blue for example with Red I don't always get the exact shade I want. I have tried all the main blending modes and still am not happy.

With Photoshop I was able to create an adjustment layer and remove most of the color from the Red layer so that it blended properly and gave me the correct shade of blue I wanted.

There are no adjustment layers with Gimp. What is the best way to remove the color the color of bottom layer so that the Red is removed and leaves a light gray or almost white layer?

message "fatal error : unhandled exception" and crash
Posted by: corbintheone - 07-06-2022, 02:59 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

Though I found previously this subject in forums, the problem doesn't seem to have the same origin.

I have only this message (and the crash) with the pictures I downloaded from icloud today, even with the lightest (test with 96k).
I can open some oldest coming (previously) from icloud and the same iphone with 7.8 Mo.
I have opened this "today's" pictures with "Photos" and tried to register it; but then, same crash with Gimp.

These pictures are on the same disk.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Gimp 2.10.32.

  GEGL problem - two versions?
Posted by: david - 07-06-2022, 09:32 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (5)

When I run one of my plug-ins which uses GEGL from the terminal I get the following error messages and many more:

/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py:865: Warning: Two different plugins tried to register 'GeglOpjpg-save_c'.
  gimp.main(None, None, _query, _run)
/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py:865: Warning: Two different plugins tried to register 'GeglOppixbuf_c'.
  gimp.main(None, None, _query, _run)
/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py:865: Warning: Two different plugins tried to register 'GeglOptiff-save_c'.
  gimp.main(None, None, _query, _run)
/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py:865: Warning: Two different plugins tried to register 'GeglOpexr-load_cpp'.
  gimp.main(None, None, _query, _run)
/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py:865: Warning: Two different plugins tried to register 'GeglOpcache_c'.

/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py:865: Warning: Two different plugins tried to register 'GeglOpcast-format_c'.
  gimp.main(None, None, _query, _run)

I am assuming that when I updated to GIMP 2.10.32 from the PandaJim repository it has loaded a new version of GEGL.

How do I solve this problem?

I am using Ubuntu 20.04

Information Add / Subtract / Intersect Selection Hotkey?
Posted by: gravanoc - 07-05-2022, 05:42 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

Using a select tool comes with four options for adjusting your selection: replace with, add to, subtract from, & intersect with current selection.  The last 3 can be activated by holding down Shift, Ctrl, & Ctrl + Shift, respectively, or you can click their icon to make them active without holding a key down.  Is there a hotkey that can do the same thing as clicking the icons?  I looked in the hotkeys menu & found some possibilities, but after assigning keys to them & trying them out, I found they did not work as intended.

how to deform a layer according to another one?
Posted by: DanielMalaga - 07-04-2022, 09:21 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

Hello,

I would like to deform one layer according to the information in another layer.
For example:

I have a photo of a lake, that I want t deform, and a photo of a face in an other layer that I want to use as the shape.
Now I want the water in the lake to be deformed in the shape of the face. Similar effect like using the warp tool but according to the shape in the other layer.

or

I have a photo and in another layer an image of crumbled paper. I want to "crumple" the photo according to the paper layer. Not just combine the layers somehow, but really deform the photo layer, so that it actually looks like crumbled.

I haven't found anything in google, but this might be because I am not able to express the right question...

Is there a tool, a filter, a script... that can do that?

Thanks for your help!

Saving TIFF Export settings - BigTIFF & Save Layers
Posted by: bernard.foot@btinternet.com - 07-04-2022, 09:19 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I've just installed 2.10.32 on 64-bit Win10.

I normally export as TIFF. The new version provides BigTIFF format. However, I don't want to use this as nothing (inc. GIMP itself) seems to understand the resulting files. Similarly, I do not want to use the "Save Layers" option that was also present in earlier versions as that results in files that I cannot view or even delete.

If I uncheck these options, that choice only survives the current session. When I re-open GIMP, I have to remember to uncheck these options. This is a pain.

Is there any way to make my preferences pemanent?

  Single stroke text paths
Posted by: mahvin - 07-03-2022, 05:57 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

I recall reading discussions on converting text to single stroke paths, most likely years ago, and cannot seem to find the discussion. Or perhaps I was dreaming it was possible and woke up and thought it was real. I am aware that text can be created to single stroke paths, and you can even buy such fonts, but...I seriously thought Ofnuts had already created this plugin. Getting old sucks, some days...
