  Simplest road to automating actions?
Posted by: devinl - 08-27-2021, 11:30 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

I have a folder containing JPGs of page scans. Each page is "4-up," that is, has an image in each of the four quarters of the page. I'd like to automate a process of GIMP reading in each file in the folder, centering the image on an 8-1/2" x 11" canvas (in case the original scan wasn't exactly this size), then parting out each of the four quarters into separate files (ideally named as the original file, but with -1, -2, -3 and -4 as suffixes).

Given that I've never used scripting or other automation in GIMP, can anyone suggest the simplest route, that requires the least amount of education on my part?

Ok, it is a lot better then when i tried it years ago. But still missing in areas.

1 - File\open dialog box is bad. It should be like a file explorer so you can see your files both in list form and\or thumbnails (small,med.large). Just having a list is terrible if you have hundreds of pics in each folder. You should have thumbs so you can quickly scan for the picture you want to open. Who can remember what name or number goes with ea pict.

2 - Also File\Open, i want to have it always open to my picture dir\folder NOT recent. I can find no option to change this. Recent is nice to have but not as a default file open.

3  Toolbox is very limited. It should list ALL items in the drop down menus so to customize your toolbox how ever you want. Not just the few that are listed.

4 - Toolbox2, a second horz or vert toolbox for more customizing. More tools visible 1 click away. My preference is horzontal.
For some reason the menu\tools\toolbox sometimes list create new toolbox but nothing happens and nothing in the help about it.

5 - Fix mouse over on toolbox. If you have all group it works fine but it you have groups and single items mouse over locks up on the single item. You then have to click on a group item to get mouse over to work again. Mouse should not lockup just by scrolling over a single tool.

6 - Pet peeve - Default install should be to the program files directory not app\data folder. Just a nice extra feature when install is complete it should ask if you want to run\start gimp.

I know i am forgetting something but will find it more i get into gimp, maybe even more LOL.

Black theme all turned white in gimp 20.10.24
Posted by: Rider45 - 08-27-2021, 05:20 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

Hi everyone, newbie here (old paint shop pro user from the jasc shareware days)

I installed gimp about 4-6 weeks ago to test it again (tired it many yrs ago)
Trying to set it up a way i like the look and feel and found 4 different black themes.
Found 1 i liked thought things were looking good. Then yesterday i tried adding some gimp and psp plugins and everytime it would crash. Even deleting the plugins i could not get gimp to restart start.
So early today i downloaded and installed ver. 20.10.24. Now none of the black themes work, all 4 are all white.
Anybody have any clue???

Thanks - rider

HINT, gimp need to add a black theme

  Colour Indexing issue
Posted by: gazza - 08-25-2021, 11:32 PM - Forum: Older Gimp versions (2.8, 2.6....) - Replies (6)

Hi
I am trying to make a layer mask from an image with a busy background. I am using the method where I change the method from RGB to indexed. Everything seems to work fine, in removing the colours, but when I change the image back to RGB, it appears all pixelated, hence after I complete the process to the point where the final image appears on a transparent background, it is STILL pixelated.

I tested this by changing the image from RGB to indexed on a setting of 16, and when I changed it back again, it never returned to the RGB mode>

Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong.

The YouTube clip I used to refer to was one that I save a long time ago, and I think the author was "Rich", but I cannot find the tutorial any more.

GAZZA

Hue-Saturation adding artifacts to some images
Posted by: Mango Turtl - 08-25-2021, 07:20 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (15)

I've noticed that on some images, specific parts of the image will occasionally become black and grainy when the Hue-Saturation feature is used. Is there any fix for this? Does anyone know what causes it? I've tested a little bit, and it seems that the black artifacts always appear, no matter what I do with the Hue-Saturation feature.

In the first attached image, I have not used Hue-Saturation yet. Some areas of the coral are naturally in shadow, but still have a color that makes sense and looks pretty good. In the second attached image, I tried to use Hue-Saturation to remove some green tint from the image. It worked, but left some areas of the coral that were previously in shadow with a black, grainy look.

My toolbar has gotten messed up somewhere, it doesn't list the color / font name / etc when I click on the text tool. My skill level is pretty beginner, I can do simple things like this but when it breaks, yeah... >.< Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks. Oh! Almost forgot, this is Windows 10 x64 ver: 21h1 and Gimp 2.10.24 Rev 3.

  Tool/brush quest
Posted by: Ugh - 08-25-2021, 06:43 AM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (2)

(Not sure if this is the right place for this) but I’ve been seeing this videos of people that use an app (not sure which ones they use) and they take one image and use an outline of another to move and warp one photo to fit the other. It’s almost like the smudge tool except nothings smeared or blurred it’s only warped, I’m not sure how I could replicate this with gimp but I was wondering if anybody knew any tools/settings that could do this (I’ve been looking for a while) any infos appreciated

Tongue Help me make a livery for a game
Posted by: _marcvs_ - 08-24-2021, 07:14 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Sup  Wink . First post yet. I'm a newcomer, and I need help for a specific task: make a race car livery for a game.
I'm not english native, so expect some mispells and a software in French.

So here's the deal: I extracted a net from the game files:
This net contains 2 layers (calques):
-Texture
[Image: sc2.png]
-UV
[Image: sc3.png]
UV layer is the outline of the model and Texture, welp, texture. What i'm  trying to do here is to use the UV layer to paint the car, but I don't want those grey outlines on the model. Here is what it looks like:
So I guess I need to add a new layer (Livery) and try to match it with UV, then erase the UV layer after I painted the whole thing.
Any ideas?

Specs: GIMP 2.10.24
Windows 7X32
