Grayscale in 16 bit TIFF highly distorted
Posted by: briligg - 05-30-2018, 09:05 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I have been working with a very large TIFF from the USGS of the lunar surface. It is an elevation map that indicates height as a shade of gray. It is too large for me to open directly, so i've been processing it with Image Magick, to crop, reduce size, or change format.

Every version generated has had the same distortion of the grayscale. There are no midtones, everything is pushed to the white and black ends of the scale. It's like the histogram was pushed to one end and wrapped around to the other end.

I am inquiring on the Image Magick forum as to how i might correct this. But it occurred to me, that maybe this is to do with a profile for grayscale embedded with the file, and that if i could convert it to a different profile, it would all be fixed.

Is that a possibility?

HUION 610 Pro tablet issues with GIMP 2.10
Posted by: Phoenisca - 05-30-2018, 03:11 PM - Forum: Windows - Replies (6)

Hi all,

I have a problem in regards to the tablet I just bought and it working with GIMP 2.10. I have the Huion 610 pro, which claims to be compatible with GIMP, but I'm not having much luck with it. The cursors track my pen on the tablet, and I can get one dot of paint on my canvas, but after that initial dot, nothing.

I have done a clean install of both GIMP and the software for the tablet. I have checked out the preferences > input device > Huion Tablet and reset everything to see if it fixed. I have also restarted GIMP to see if it fixes the settings. It shows up in the devices tab with multiple different icons (same as the cursor), but I continue to only get a single dot on my page when I got to test it.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

What method would I use in Gimp to fix this image?
Posted by: alock - 05-30-2018, 03:06 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Good Morning,

I have a few images that were obtained from a camera phone.

As you can see from the example that I have attached (image.jpg), there is a grayish background, which most likely was caused by the lighting in the room when the picture was taken. Printing this page makes it even worse (Printed.jpg).

I would like for the background to be white and the image black. But am not sure what method in gimp would be best to accomplish this. I'm looking for the easiest method as I am not pro in gimp.

I plan to use these images for my kids (I teach at a preschool) and would like the images to appear as if they came right out of a textbook, crisp and clear.

Appreciate any response, I can get on this.

Kind Regards,
Andrea

GIMP 2.10 status of locking icons difficult to see
Posted by: nelo - 05-30-2018, 02:30 PM - Forum: Gimp 2.10 - Replies (8)

Hi there,

I wonder if the status of the locking icons ( see screenshot) can be styled  differently.
I find it very difficult to see whether they are active or not. Some colored background ( maybe green) might be helpful.

Gimp 2.10.2 dark theme, symbolic icons.

Thanks for any help

Error after installing gmic in Gimp 2.8
Posted by: Zero01 - 05-29-2018, 09:46 PM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - No Replies

GIMP 2.8.22
G'mic_gimp2.8_qt_win32
Installed on a Windows Vista 32-bit OS in VirtualBox VM on Windows 10 64-bit host.

I get the error message after clicking on "G'MIC-Qt.." in the Filters menu

Code:
"This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt
platform plugin "windows"
in". Reinstalling the application may fix this problem

after clicking OK another message appears, reads:

Code:
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an
unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
and then I get:

Code:
GIMP Message

Plug-in crashed: "gmic_gimp_gt.exe"
(C:\Users\mart\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\gmic_gimp_qt
\gmic_gimp_qt.exe)

The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal
state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to
be on the safe side.

I tried re-installing but that didn't help. Also, my plug-ins and scripts come from my 64-bit system, so not sure if anything might be clashing...
EDIT: Got rid of all the .exe files from ' .gimp-2.8\plug-ins ', except for the plug-ins for Gap, not sure if .py files are specific to any particular 32- or 64-bit OS...
Just noticed there is no 'Python-Fu' under 'Filters, so no Console either...

Any help greatly appreciated.

  Unsupported compression file GIMP 2.10.0
Posted by: Statesman - 05-29-2018, 12:44 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

Hello there. I am trying to open a file (bmp) and am getting the error:

Opening 'C:\Users\Chris\Desktop\Boeing 737 Britannia\texture\B737TAIL_T.bmp' failed: Unsupported compression (861165636) in BMP file and was wondering what can be done to open it?

I have attached the file

.bmp   B737TAIL_T.bmp (Size: 256.07 KB / Downloads: 750)

The program DXTBMP opens the file OK, and it reports the format as: BMP (DXT3) 512x512 16Bit

Thanks Chris

  Gimp Extras

Surfing the web yesterday I found GIMP Extensions Pack for Windows, it had Mathmap etc included - Is it ok to add on?
If not where am I able to get some scripts and plugins. The gimp I downloaded 2.10.0 didn't come with any and the gimp scripts page hasn't been updated for awhile. Is there another place to get them?
ofnuts I need your Paths page address too.
I won't be downloading anything until Friday night at the earliest unless I can stay up till after 2am Thursday morning as I am a night owl not a morning person. My Peak hour data is down to dial up speed  so unless something is really important I won't be downloading or uploading.

How to keep large file but export reduced optimised
Posted by: enginestar - 05-28-2018, 10:59 PM - Forum: Gimp 2.10 - Replies (4)

Let's say I have a file that is 4000 x 4000.
I edit and want to keep a master file.

I now want to save a version that is 1000 x 1000 as  a JPG.
Is there a keyboard shortcut to do this?

Do I have to:

- save
- reduce size
- export as JPG
- close file and be careful not to save (which I've done many times in Photoshop).
(or i can undo - but still same problem)

Also... another question...
What automation tools are there... what can I automate? Just looking for a link to read more.

Also... how do I drag the window around. If no tool is selected, I can't drag around - I normally press the space bar and then move the mouse around. I can't find the same tool you have in other graphic editors.

Thanks.

  GIMP and Bitmap Headers
Posted by: Jinx - 05-28-2018, 09:19 PM - Forum: General questions - No Replies

With my version of GIMP (2.10.2), when I 'export as,' the program will create BMP files with 128 offset-long headers.  Is this something new?  In the past the headers were only 40 offsets long, filled mostly with 00's.

Reason I ask is that the application I am using (AC3D) wont let me load a texture with a header that long.  In the past, the 40 offset-long headers worked like a charm.  But all of a sudden my textures won't load.  I can even take an older, loadable texture, open it with GIMP and merely save it as a different file name (no other edits), and AC3D will not accept it.  But if I merely re-name the file from the file explorer, it works like a charm.

Any help or direction would be deeply appreciated.
