  Outline/echo around an image?
Posted by: MADdukeDUDE - 02-17-2018, 04:33 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (5)

I don't even know what to call it but I'm trying to get the outer lines around the mtn dew logo and I can't seem to get it. The closest I've gotten is growing the selection but that rounds the edges of the selection. Any ideas?

  1970's Danish Maritime Radio Aesthetic
Posted by: coastal-electronics - 02-17-2018, 12:19 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

I need a logo designed for a small electronics business, thought I would have a go myself but cannot afford the time investment needed to learn GIMP.
I have a pretty definite brief so this should be a straightforward job for somebody competent in GIMP. can pay direct bank transfer or paypal etc etc. pls could I ask any interested party to reply here or email for more details.

if we can work well together on this logo then there is a website required also.

The business involved is chiefly concerned with seabed mapping and also repairing/installing/selling marine electronics to merchant and fishing vessels. we are based on the fringes of the universe in the Orkney Islands. as such we get involved with a broad spectrum of electronic engineering.

aesthetic/design influences I would like to be harmonised with the brand are:

"Sailor" SP Radio A/S, a Danish manufacturer of marine radio eqpt from the 1970s (google image for "sailor radio" will show nice old green radios)
Herge's Tintin artwork
1960s suitcase stickers
fonts from WW2 posters
retro Euro

The angle I am going for is vaguely retro/punk ironic: 50% of the business is proudly keeping old junk running, 50% is selling/installing/promoting cutting edge gear.

thanks in advance for any interest.

Changing names on things in Gimp?
Posted by: colorizing - 02-16-2018, 10:42 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hello.

Im new here, I do love GIMP only tried it a few days now. But I was wondering is it possible to change names and costumise it. Instead of "GNUConfused bildmanipuleringsprogram" to "GIMP bildredigering" and for tools for my own enjoyment?

I may be unclear, but like MusicBee it has a ".lang"-file that can be modified just like I want it. Is there something similar to GIMP?

Also, can I change the background before i add a picture? I like the logo, but I want to use a costum background.

Also I found icon's on a page with costum can it be change also?

Sorry for all the questions, but I love when its possible to costumize programs. I'm using Windows 10.

(I posted this on another forum but i then read it was not used anymore so i hope you guys can help me here) Smile

  insert colored rectangle with text
Posted by: jphyde - 02-16-2018, 10:12 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

I need to insert a rectangle with text in an image. I have created the rectangle, but when I paste it into the image it loses its color and becomes transparent. The text shows, but it is not black like it is in the image I have created. It is made up of little squares instead.

I would also like to have lines of a different color than the background of the rectangle on the top and bottom as borders. It's for a header image on a web site I am building.

Thank you!
Jim

Question Gimp 2.8 and 2.9 performance (brush lag)
Posted by: dr_Fell - 02-16-2018, 03:29 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (10)

Hello. I have been using Gimp for many years (I guess it started with 1.2 or even 1.0 version). Nothing complicated, basic photo edition, low resolution. It was fine. Few Years ago I started to photograph more seriously than before and I decided that I move to Photoshop, mainly for its much bigger tutorials availability and 16-bit tiff support. This year, after my subscription ran out, I decided that I will try to save some $$ and give Gimp another try. I realised, that after some modifications I can use part of my PS experience inside Gimp and it seems 16-bit support is almost there!

After I forced Gimp 2.8 to recognise my tablet I realised I have problems with performance - precisely speaking, brush lag. I am working on quite big files (up to 24mpix) and when I paint on a layer mask using Wacom tablet I have serious brush lag. I realise that my laptop is quite weak (Pentium 2020M, 8GB ram), but Photoshop didn't have this problem, even when working with 16-bit. Is that normal Gimp behaviour?

Second question - I tried Gimp 2.9 - despite 2 core support it is significantly slower (more lag), and after enabling 16-bit depth it is even worse. Is 2.9 slower than 2.8?

Michael

P.S. I tried to disable rulers. It helped -a bit-.

  gimp shutdown (reprieve)
Posted by: rich2005 - 02-16-2018, 08:16 AM - Forum: Windows - No Replies

Apologies to user moderation, I deleted what I thought was a duplicate post.

Roughly goes like this,

Shuts Gimp down by closing the middle window, leaves the tool and dialogue docks behind.

How to close all at once.

------
I can not reproduce that but;

There are often good reasons for using the traditional Gimp three window mode, however I would recommend if possible going into single window mode Windows -> Single window mode which will close everything down.

or

Use the menu system File -> Quit

  Extruded Text and Paths
Posted by: Nateart - 02-15-2018, 07:43 PM - Forum: Tutorials and tips - Replies (4)

I've been banging my head against the wall trying to use two paths to create an envelope for 3D text.
Both with 2.9.5 and 2.8.2
I saw an example in these threads, but can't find it now and I never get the text to do anything but flow along 1 path

Here's the effect which was easy to do using 3D Rhino which I've had for years... it is not free and basically is a Nurbs program

The final =

  Scale measure
Posted by: Beginner's Luck - 02-15-2018, 01:07 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (9)

Fairly basic user, trying to measure off of scanned mapping where the scale is all to cock.

Is there any way to use the measure tool, or another tool, to set a scale and measure using it - i.e. can I log points x and y, tell the tool that's 100, or whatever, and then have it automatically scale any further measurements to that?

So, on a map, I could click either edge of a grid square, which is - say - 336 pixels, and log that as 1000m, then measure a line somewhere else, let's say 512 pixels, and have the measure tool automatically tell me that's 1524m, without me having to break out the calculator for every measurement?

Smooth curves with paintbrush and mirroring
Posted by: sprockets - 02-14-2018, 05:48 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

Had a nice explanation and accidentally hit close Sad

Anyways, I'd like some help drawing smoother curves. I tried dynamics and my issues are that it doesn't follow to the cursor all the way(bigger line, bigger gap) and at the highest setting which is the only one that looks right to me its a bit slow. Is there some setting I missed to get it right on the cursor(I'm stuck using a mouse)? Is it just slow because of my pc or just the way it works?

If anyone has seen the christmas yogscast jingle jam then last year kieran used a similar tool to smooth his drawing and it seemed to work great. I think he was using photoshop though, plus a touchscreen and pen. I'd like to stay on gimp because it's free and just for fun. But even for fun I'd rather my drawings look a bit better than an episode of dr katz.

Also, is there a mirroring function(like in kieran's live drawing) that I've missed. I can't seem to find one. Plugin?

  ofn-text-along-path request

@ofnuts

could you possibly add a tooltip to the 'Height Reference' ?!

Every time i want to use the plug-in, i have to figure out what 'Baseline', 'Top of Box' or 'Middle Of Caps' means (i know its explained in the doc).

'Middle of capital letters' would be clearer for example.
And 'Top of Bounding Box'.
