I'm struggling to learn GIMP but inconsistent and incorrect print behavior has been my biggest issue. Often I can't even simply turn the image and print it! I've encountered a range of issues but the biggest issue is that it will not accept any paper/layout changes.

The thing is, it seems to be slightly different per-printer.

On my Epson Stylus Pro 3880 (A2 photo printer) I set it to Landscape 13x19" (A3+, SuperA3) and go to print but it reverts to a smaller portrait every time. I recall that this wasn't the case when I first tested over USB but no amount of tweaking and restarting seems to help when using it as a network printer (the way I intend to use it). It doesn't matter what I change in the printer preferences or print dialog.

On my HP OfficeJet 7000 Wide Format I ruined several sheets of expensive paper with the printer printing off the page because of some glitch where changing settings would result in completely incorrect page size until exiting and re-opening GIMP. Even when it is seemingly working and I can print to Legal or Tabloid, the dialog with paper and layout settings always reverts to whatever it's been stuck on when I open it (not always Letter/A4).

My Ricoh C250DN has given me less trouble but even it has had the problem where I have to close and reopen GIMP after several failed prints.

Because of these print issues I have to export and print from IrfanView. I will be printing to very expensive A2 photo papers that I can't afford to ruin so I really hope someone knows a work-around for these issues that doesn't involve rotating the image as an image edit. Thanks!

This is something i have been thinking over for a long time.

How to fill a selection with random little dots, like particles, all roughly the same size, but not exactly, and no overlap.

Could be used for a particle shadow like here:

   

Tried something with the G'MIC Box Fitting and Morphological (Erosion) filters.
Still not 100% to my liking.

   

Hey all, I'm using GIMP 2.8 on a Windows 10 OS. I've been working for several hours on a project, and everything has been fine up until now. I have been working with GIFs, adding text and borders to them, and have run into a snag. On the first GIF I was able to add text, with a drop shadow, and a border. No issue. 

The second GIF, the drop shadow does a weird 'striation/pixelation' effect when I go to duplicate my layers, in order to merge them together for the final product (to ensure every frame contains the effect). I've even gone through the process to merge the layers individually, to see if it would resolve itself...but it did not, even on the Playback. 

Is there any way that I can avoid this layering issue? I didn't seem to have this problem with the first GIF, and I have done nothing different this time around, as far as I can tell.

I have gimp 2.8 and I want to be able to put the word "sold" or a large letter "x" over one item in a photo array of photos all on one page. I will be selling items from that one page and I would like to be able to mark the sold ones rather than have to create several photos with only one item per photo. Can someone please tell me how to do this? Thanks in advance.

When I select circle and Render- >Line nova, it renders across all image and not inside the circle only.

How to render line nova inside the circle and how to make lines appear as on eye ?
They are not straight but somewhat wiggle.

I saw this in this book called mastering filters for photography. I am guessing it is from photoshop. Here is the image below.
I am curious if gimp has anything like this or ufraw does maybe? I tried looking for it but wasn't able to find it as why I am asking here in this forum.

I'm a little struggling with layer boundaries in gimp.
Maybe it's because I'm more used to photoshop...

If I move a layer, the layer boundary does not contain the whole canvas any more. This seems very odd to me, because I can't fill or draw at the whole canvas anymore. First, I have to resize the boundary manually.

Is there a way to resize the layer boundary automatically after moving the layer? Basically I want the layer boundary allways fit at least the canvas... is this possible?

I'm using gimp 2.8 on windows

Hello,

I have been designing for not long time and I still feel that I don't connect some dots properly.

I am mainly interested in knowing how to make final design file print compatible.
I want to make sure it will 300 DPI and be in high resolution to be printable.

Here's my workflow:

1. I download free clipart/vector and immediately open it in GIMP
2. I do adjustments, add other elements from other files, add text
3. Before finishing and exporting graphic I set print size to 300 DPI in "Image" > "Print Size"
4. I flatten everything and export into .PNG ready to print

- Do you see any mistake in this process that would make final design not print-ready?
I am concerned about opening .JPG/.PNG graphic elements. Must they be 300 DPI before I even start working with them?

- Does it matter when I set "Print Size" to 300 DPI? Must it be done in the beginning or as long as it's done before
exporting project to final design, it does not matter?

- I often would create new page where I would modify graphic elements and I would not set DPI before I do that.
Is it bad?

I get half picture, look at example, when i try printing from Gimp 2.9.6 on windows 10. Anyone who has an idea what to do?
