  Blast from the past
Posted by: Espermaschine - 11-06-2016, 09:18 PM - Forum: Watercooler - Replies (11)

I bought a book, called the 'WOW Book 4' for 2€'s.
Its from 1998 and teaches how to use Photoshop. Included are some interesting effects and a CD with images, actions, goodies, etc.

Im very interested in this stuff, because of all my old electronic music record covers that i have from the mid-late 90ies.
A lot has changed since then.

Interesting fact: apparently PS had no layer effects back then. All the texteffects are done with 'Lighting Effects' which looks very similar to the same filter we have in Gimp.
Also with every lighting effects tutorial, there is a warning that you need a lot of RAM to use it Smile

A lot of the images on the CD are quite small, by todays standards, which makes me wonder how they printed.
All the illustrations in the book are small. Sometimes it makes it hard to read.
Also all the steps for every tutorial are written for beginners.

Some of the shiny effects for crystal, chrome and metal are done with the Plastic Wrap filter (there are a few scripts on the net for doing that in Gimp...or G'MIC Relief Light).

Is there a documentation page ?

What does 'Accuracy' and 'Guide Path' mean ?

  python plug-ins for paths
Posted by: Espermaschine - 11-06-2016, 02:44 AM - Forum: Other graphics software - Replies (1)

Can python plug-ins that work with paths in Gimp, be modified so that they work in Inkscape, or is that a complete different approach to writing code ?

Im asking because trandoduction wrote the 'Select Area Between Paths' plug-in and it would be great to have something like this as an extension for Inkscape.

Guides do not stay as placed
Posted by: Yash Pal - 11-05-2016, 02:54 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

When I try to place the vertical guides (the ones I move from left hand ruler), they disappear as soon as I let go of the move tool. Earlier it was the horizontal guides which were playing this trick.

I have seen edit> preferences but could not make out what adjustments are wrong.

Can someone help me please to restore guides.

I almost always uncheck 'snap to guides' under 'view' when I try to place guides.

OS Ubuntu 14.04; GIMP - the version available in software centre (no addl plugins, plugouts)

  Fun Wallpaper ?
Posted by: Espermaschine - 11-04-2016, 03:09 AM - Forum: Gallery - Replies (5)

So after ofnuts boggled my mind with his sine wave magic, i used a bw bi-linear gradient, with a duplicate set to 'Difference', posterized to get this seamless pattern:

After bumpmapping the pattern into a grey layer, curves and a bit of processing, then G'MIC Sepia, i got this, which i like for its 3D-ish quality:

free subtle grunge brushes from spoongraphics

Get them here, they are nice for giving your image a bit of texture:

Brushes are 2000x2000px.
ABR file type, but work in Gimp 2.8 without a need to convert.
