Selection disappears when made floating |

Hello,
I'm trying to save different selections of an image to separate layers, so that they can be edited independently. This worked fine before, but for some reason my usual process stopped working. What I did before was:
1. Make a selection in the original image
2. Make the selection floating (Right click-->Selection-->Floating)
3. Create new layer from the floating layer (Right click on floating layer-->To new layer)
4. When I wanted to edit the selection, I select the considered layer and Right click-->Alfa layer to selection
When I try to do this now, the selection disappears when I make the selection floating in step number two, and I'm not able to use the alfa to selection option in the new layer.
Any ideas why this is happening? If I create a new image it works fine. I've also tried removing a bunch of much layers but no success.
Many thanks in advance for some clarification on this!

"Newbye" question about layers |

Hi.
Beforehand, I am not a native English speaker. Please excuse any mistake. I am not a very experienced Gimp user but I used it a lot to modify/improve images. Until now, I did not have any problem and required no help. Most of my work was about getting the best out of photographs for my wife's PhD and the result was very good.
I do now have a problem with technical images that I must redo (very low resolution that must be improved). I stick to version 2.8 because of brushes (I am no expert and do not want to create a new brush every time).
I need to import the old image as bottom layer, create a new layer and overlay my new drawing. Only problem, nothing is drawn on the new layer and I need advice.
Thanks a lot.

Rotate freezes before completing |

When I try to rotate a pic that has a layer mask, most of the time it's fast until about 3/4 or more into the process and then it freezes. I use the paintbrush to erase about 90% of the pic, leaving only the face. Pics that aren't layer masks don't have this problem. Also when I try to scale the layer mask that many times freezes also. Is there a setting that I can make to make this work better?

Gimp Automatically Resizes |

Hello everyone,
I need to create a cover for my book.
I set canvas width to 10.4325 inches, but Gimp automatically resizes it to 10.433 inches.
How can I stop this from happening?
One thing I notice is that when I frist insert the size: 10.4325 inches, then accept these values.
Next, I open canvas size again, it is not set to inches but automatically displays the values as pixels. When I then click inches again, I get 10.433 inches.
Is this thus some type of calculation problem taking place?
Thank you,
Immortality

GIMP seems too dark to me |

Hello,
I previously had a GIMP that seemed quite bright to me and I saw everything more
clearly. After the update from openSUSE_Leap_15.2 to now 15.3, the GIMP appears
much darker, so that I have trouble seeing details.
How/where can I change that?
Thanks for hints.
Greetings, WGz
