  Transparency fill borders
Posted by: joeyeroq - 05-09-2020, 12:58 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

In game engines and 3d software, to counter transparency issues, they use a technique where they fill the transparent parts with the borders or edges of non-transparent parts, I don't know what this technique is called.
Here's an example with fortnite, but all new 2d and 3d games do this.

-What is this technique called in for example photoshop?
-How can you do this with gimp, preferably automated with a script?
Thanks in advance!

Photo Add a solid border without changing the overall size
Posted by: Summoner99 - 05-09-2020, 12:38 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I'm fairly new to Gimp, so this might be a straightforward answer.

I have a collection of images that are a solid color with transparent backgrounds.

https://imgur.com/a/mw6jj6x

This is a crude example. The left arrow is the type of image I have where Green is the solid color and White is transparent.

My goal is to add borders like the red in the example.
The middle adds a single layer of pixels outside of the original, overwriting some transparency.
The right replaces the outermost layer of pixels with a new color without replacing any transparent pixels.

Clearly the optimal solution would work for any number of pixels.

The images are not simple polygons so I can't just use a specialized rectangle/circle/etc drawing tool.
I created the example by using the pencil tool and manually changing pixels to red. This is not feasible for larger images.

Also avoiding some sort of smoothing would be nice. I want the border to be a solid color. Any solutions that involve smoothing are still acceptable.

Thanks for any and all advice!

  Can I add a plug-in to GIMP 2.10 using Mac 10.15
Posted by: itmakesyousmile - 05-08-2020, 05:05 AM - Forum: OSX - Replies (3)

Since upgrading both Mac OS and GIMP (from 2.8 to 2.10), I lost a plug-in I was using, and cannot figure out how to add in new OS. Any Mac users out there that might be able to help me?

  Overlapping Paths
Posted by: akovia - 05-07-2020, 11:49 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (37)

Is there a script or plugin out there that can automatically merge/intersect overlapping paths?

When it's a text path I can sometimes get away with ofn-path-edits > Break text path apart then ofn-paths-to-selection, but the mileage varies depending on the font and it's still a few steps to get done.

I know inkscape is always an option as well, but it has its own issues.

I just wondered if it was even possible to script a true merge paths in gimp, or even a way to break apart and add all to selection in one go?

Bug Doesnt recognize new brushes in folder
Posted by: Human3 - 05-07-2020, 10:04 PM - Forum: Installation and usage - Replies (1)

I am not proficient in gimp, and must relearn it everytime i use it.  I keep hoping i will have more time to learn and remember.  Ok, I thought i set gimp up so i could remove brushes from the brushes folder in my c directory for ease of use, and then just do a refresh to see them in gimp.  I dont rem how that worked though.

Today i used the brushes in the file and then took them out and put a different sent in.  Gimp still shows the old ones but they are greyed because they arent there.  I did a refresh and got a list of error and no new burshes, i also went through the edit preferences folders and changed it there, deleted it and added it in, and get the same error.  Yet I dont understand why those errors?  why is gimp even looking where it is for those files when i have it listed in preferences, where they are?

I did search and everything i find is the same, moving the files into gimps umm, directory.  etc. ok thanks for any help you can give me this is making this old woman crazy!

Unable decode abr version 5 is the error...

[Citrix] GIMP doesn't see user's local drives
Posted by: Morph - 05-07-2020, 04:57 PM - Forum: Windows - Replies (6)

I know this may be a odd question for many of you to read.  But we use GIMP in a Citrix virtualized environment (for education).  This way, no matter the device, a user can use the applications we present to them.  Sort of like mobile lab access where ever you are.

I didn't realize when I installed it, is that when you attempt to open/save you don't get your typical 'file manager' to allow you to select "MY PC"
It does see the mapped network drives and the folders within their user profile.  But while that's ok, it's important to be able to access the user's local device (harddrive or USB) when they are in this virtual environment. So I need to see the top level "My PC"

Is anyone out there using GIMP in Citrix XenApp?  Have you found a way to add the user's local devices?
What this means is that I need to be able to give the user access to the "My PC" option you typically see on a Windows computer's File Manager.

Is there a way, maybe through Registry, to add this as a folder option for all users?

  Batch fill the transparent backgound
Posted by: Gimpyamateur - 05-07-2020, 04:40 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hello everyone,

I am looking for 2 plugins ideally (I'm not any good with these texting/code stuff) to help me edit 170 sprites that will:

1) batch delete "select by color tool" of the background color all the sprites and,
2) batch fill in the background (all the checkered areas) with a color of my choice.

It's been quite tedious to do it manually and so far I couldn't find anything on the internet.

Thank you Smile

  Free select tool
Posted by: GIMPMEUP - 05-07-2020, 01:56 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

Hi,

Im trying to cut out an object with the free select tool (lasso). After I was halfway through I saved the file. But the free select tool (lasso) automatically connected my last selection point with the first where I started and closed the selection even though I was only halfway through. This cut my picture in half. Is there any possibilty to open up again a closed/finished selection?  I know that I can reverse each selection step using backspace as long as the selection isn't closed. But that doesnt work anymore.
