(new user) Unable to save any file including .xcf |

Brand new Gimp user here, using 2.10.2 on Windows 7, 32 bit.
Installation went very smoothly.
Opened a relatively small existing jpg (photo), less than 100kb probably.
Managed to use one of the basic guides to convert image to a pseudo circle.
Then tried saving to .png, but the save dialogue just "hung".
Tried to save to .xcf, but that hung too.
Restarted gimp, and after reading around, realised I should probably be exporting as, rather than saving as.
Did that, but it also hung.
Restarted again, and just tried saving as .xcf. Hung again.
Restarted again, and now I couldn't even open the .jpg, or any similar .jpg.
The open dialogue hangs in a similar way to save.
I assume there must be something wrong with my installation of Gimp.
Only thing I can think of is to reinstall.
(Maybe I should reboot first - haven't tried that).
Thought I might be memory constrained, since this box only has 2GB, but these are small files I'm trying to work with.
Should I try an older version, perhaps? Where would I get that from? I didn't see any options for older versions on the download page.
Thanks a lot in advance for any advice.

Any Freelancers? |

Hi,
I'm wondering if any gimp coders would consider creating a small app for me? I use freelancer.com so we could use that platform for the job if you like.
This is the problem. I rustproof vehicles and have had a very nice app developed for my website where I can upload pictures of the process of rustproofing a customer's vehicle. You can see it here: https://crp.before-n-after.co.uk/index.p...dsale-none
Or if the link gets deleted as I expect it will, pm me and I will send you a link. It's taking me far too long to upload the images to the website app. It sometimes takes a whole day! I need to do it in half an hour max. I'm quite happy to pay £500 for an app to my user spec. (I can't afford more than this).
So here is my specification.
Loading images to CRP page.
It's taking way too long!
This is what I'm doing at the moment.
- I put the smart card in a card reader.
- On my mac, in Desktop I use “Quick Look” to view the image. I then rename the file. Examples “front outriggers before pressure wash” etc. etc.
- I upload each image individually to Pixlr.com (Free online imaging app). On Pixlr, I can crop some, add brightness and contrast to some and blur some parts of some images (to hide untidy parts of my workshop which are visible!). I can also compress the files.
- On Pixlr I click “Save” and then “Replace” for the file to replace the original, uncompressed file on the smartcard, with the same file name.
- I then upload the files to the CRP.
On the last one I did this took all day! I need to speed it up so that it takes no longer than half an hour. This is how I would like to do it:
1. I upload the images on the smart card to an app. I've found a very good app on the Mac store to compress the files called “Compress Lite”. This does a very good job of batch compressing and the images are all compressed down to about 230 GB in an instant. Then I want to upload the image to an app where they all appears as thumbnails on the app with a field for the caption. I edit the images as thumbnails. The images and editing are pretty routine now, I don't need to see them large format, although maybe a usefull option would be to click on the image to see it larger. I crop, lighten, add contrast, blur, as necessary. It would be good if I could then click on a button and all the images and their captions get uploaded to the CRP automatically.
I hope this appeals to someone.
Cheers Chris

16 bit support |

Hi!
They say that GIMP 2.10 supports 16 bit images but when I import a 16-bit TIF to GIMP, it prompts a warning that it will convert it to 8 bit. I am confused. It looks like it didn't loose any smooth tonal changes but I'm not sure cuz I don't use any professional monitor.
Somebody could explain me what's up?
And another question, simultaneously.
I am a BIT confused about all these BIT depths. I can save a 16-bit TIF file in GIMP with JPEG compression. It seems that it keeps all smooth tonal changes but the file size is very small, like average 8-bit JPEG. Is is possible that 16-bit information is stored in such a small file? Of course some JPG-typical artifacts occur but the result ich still so much better than an usual JPEG. Lastly, could we alter the amount of JPEG compression within TIF format?

Can pdb.gimp_histogram replace this functionality? |

I roughly translated a c plugin into a python script here:
http://www.gimplearn.net/viewtopic.php/G...815#p17815
The main logic is it loops through all the pixel coordinates.
- at each pixel coordinate.
- grab color value of red channel of bottom layer (r value) turns this into an index.
- add color value of red channel of top layer to color[index] (r[index])
- increment frequency (frequency[index], rf[index]) (like counting pixels)
- do this to green, and blue values as well.
That's it, it does this for all channels to create an RGB curve using the above calculated values.
I am wondering if pdb.gimp_histogram can be used so that script is faster than the current pixel by pixel calculation.
I tried thinking about histogram but I am not familiar with it and the location is involved as it calculates what color is actually in place of previous color so I am totally confused and not sure at all if histogram can some how perform this task.

Really excited about the new GIMP!
I cannot seem to get the new Drop Shadow (Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow...) to work.
Legacy works fine but Drop Shadow (GEGL) produces nothing. What am I doing wrong?

To print a card on both sides of a sheet |

Hello, recently my mother did two images to be the back and front of a card. The idea was to replicate them as much as possible into a single sheet, to generate as many cards as possible. I went to a specialized place to print them (do not know the name of this kind of place in English), since there is no printer here. The attendant replicated them, but when the printing was done, the card's images were printed inclined. A new attempt was made with a different kind of paper (couche instead offset), because the attendant said it was related to the paper kind, and the printed images became less inclined, but enough as the back and front of the card did not match, they were not aligned, so there was a resulting with strip. The man responsible
My mother remade the images. She replicated the cards front and back images herself.
Here is a screenshot of them:
However the attendant (a different one from the day before) said something about how these images would not work, that they needed to be in the same pdf file (all the images until them were jpg) in two different pages.
My mother did this: but I do not think it will work, I don't know how to generate a .pdf with two pages with it, one a pdf with a single page. There is a non selectable option called "Two-sided" on "Page-setup", but well, is non selectable.
So my question is if it will once more be printed in a non aligned way (I think it will) , and if that's the case, what should I do to solve the problem.
Thanks for any help.
