Weird font previews in text tools? |

Can anyone explain why the little square font previews alongside each font when you scroll through the list in text tools, bear no resemblance to the actual font? Most of them look like Arabic or Chinese - which renders them pretty useless becuase they tell you nothing about the font.

Upgrade or Not? |

Currently just getting started using Gimp 2.8 on Mac with High Sierra
Is there any advantage to upgrading to 2.10?
If I upgrade, is it necessary to first delete my current version?

Hello,
I am new to the forum.
So far addicted to PS but...
Could anybody advice which library/function/algorithm GIMP uses for extracting/refining foreground object(s)?
I mean: is this OpenCV, MarvinJS whateever ?

Active layer not visible |

Hi all, my apologies if I'm posting in the wrong section.
My issue is that since 2.8, I am getting the error message in the title. I upgraded to 2.10 hoping it would help, but it has not.
What I am trying to do is erase some pixels on an upper layer, dependent on pixels on the bottom layer. In the past, the way I have done this is to hide the upper layer I want to erase pixels on, so that I can use the lower layer as a guide to where to erase. However, it seems that I cannot do this as it won't erase, and I get the message "The active layer is not visible."
I have read that this was implemented to prevent the accidental editing of hidden layers. I understand this logic. However, I cannot find any information as to whether there is a way to turn off this protection. I use this method quite a lot in the pixel art that I do, and it will be quite frustrating if I cannot do this.
Also, my apologies if this has been covered before, I tried several searches and could not find anything related.

icons for drop-down menus |

Hello. I'm using both 2.10 (appimage) and 2.99 (installed) on Ubuntu 18.04. Adwaita (default) Themes > Applications and Themes > Icons. Being on gimp-edge ppa, I was automatically upgraded to 2.99 a couple of weeks ago. Two issues:
1 - my scanners have disappeared from File > Create. This is not important to me; I only discovered that facility a little while ago. Before that, and now, I scan first outside Gimp and then just open the saved scan. Still, it would be nice...
2 - I see no icons next to the words on the drop-down menus. I've installed 2.10 under Windows / VMware, just to compare, and the icons are there. I'm thinking of icons such as File > New, File > Print, ... There seems to be room for them, but nothing shows. I think these did appear in 2.8, but I'm not sure.
Does anyone know if they 'should' appear?
[Gimp Theme is 'System' and Gimp Icon Theme is 'Color' - I did have to find and copy a full set of Icon Themes from 2.10, as only Legacy and Symbol were complete in 2.99]
These questions are more about my peace of mind than anything else.
Any ideas?

Can't edit text on image? |

I tried to do something with gimp just now, that I've never had any issues with before, and by before I mean earlier tonight.
I'm simply trying to add some text to an image, but for whatever reason it seems to be going haywire.
I open the image, select text tool from side panel, click on the image to type my text. But then I notice the little arrow which lets you change the text from the little tool box that appears above the text box, isn't there. Nor can I change the font from the text option in the main left panel. Also, each time I enter text or try to change the font, it keeps adding a 'text layer' in my history tab on the right hand panel.
I'm using V 2.8.16
Thanks in advance.

Clipboard not working |

I have three systems running Gimp 2.10.6
One of them, a Surface Pro 4 running Win 10 does not copy anything to the clipboard when I do a copy. The other two systems, a Win 10 desktop, and a Win 7 laptop, work fine.
However the Surface Pro 4 does a copy and paste just fine using the graphic program Paint.net
Anyone have any ideas what is wrong?

Is merging and flattening the same thing? |

I know this question has been asked already but I still can’t find an answer.
When I formatted my book interior design, CreateSpace said that all my illustrations NEED to be flattened. If I don’t do it they will. I have three illustrations that will be on cream color paper so I need transparency in my images and I can’t find a way to have both transparency and flatten in my image.
I did see many suggestions to merge the layers, image -->Merge visible layers.
Is merging and flattening the same thing?

How to delete color of cutout areas? |

When I cut out the green from an image, it will make the area completely transparent BUT keep the color information.
This never happend in old gimp versions (which also had BW filter, like any other normal image editor)
This can be rejected when exporting the image, but while editing I will always have these ugly disturbing green fussy borders, making me this I didn't cut it correctly.
How do I make it so that fully transparent pixels are completely black?
