  macros vs script-fu vs python-fu
Posted by: DebianFanatic - 10-06-2018, 08:22 PM - Forum: Scripting questions - Replies (5)

Absolute Beginner here, to python & to scripting/macroing/extending GIMP.

I had a vague remembrance that GIMP is "scriptable", and the term "macro" came to my  mind.

After considerable googling, I've about decided that "macro" is an inaccurate term, and "extending GIMP" is the correct terminology (although I tend to think of "extending" as adding new features more then simply automating the features that already exist).

I've also about decided that "script-fu" and "python-fu" are "the" automating options; I'm unsure if either is built-in, but I didn't notice these options in my Gimp's "Filter" menu until I did, on my Debian box, "aptitude install gimp-python". Not saying they weren't there; I just didn't know to look for them until after I added gimp-python to my computer.

So my first question (with more to come under different posts): Am I getting close to understanding the terminology/concepts for automating steps in GIMP? To give you an idea of where I'm trying to head, I just added a bunch of numbered labels to 28 people in a photo:

[Image: 0?ui=2&ik=02ec0251fe&attid=0.2&permmsgid..._jmw7lnq11]

I did this manually by creating 28 layer groups, one for each label, and then on one layer drawing an ellipse and bucket-filling it, and then creating a text layer centered on the white ellipse. Afterward I realized that this repetitive process could probably be automated. My next questions will tackle various aspects of this task, but first I just want to make sure I'm understanding the concepts/terminology.

Thanks!

Photo How can I imitate this distorted look?
Posted by: Delfin93 - 10-06-2018, 09:59 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hello!

I'd like to imitate that look.

[Image: 42727157_2027185737344649_337663555648094208_o.jpg]

Can you give me some tips on how to get this look right?
Is there a special Plug-In, which shows a picture so pixelated?

Thanks a lot!

Video Line Sketch?
Posted by: Batman - 10-05-2018, 08:05 PM - Forum: Gimp 2.10 - Replies (7)

Okay, in 2.8.22, I had this fabulous script-fu filter called Line Sketch. Since "upgrading" to 2.10.4 (maybe 44; not sure) I can't seem to find the corresponding filter.

The effect I'm going for is a photo to something like this:

What am I missing, and who am I missing it with?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Oh, long time user, first time needing help(with this version)....

  In a whirl
Posted by: QuinB - 10-05-2018, 07:22 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Now, I do understand that trying to duplicate the results of an older version of software on the latest'n'greatest can be troublesome, but I was looking over a v2.6 tutorial Cool wave effect and came unstuck.

The tutorial uses the solid noise function as a basis, claims to throw in difference clouds,  lightens things up with colour level adjustment and throws in a motion blur before applying the whirl and pinch function. Then is duplicates the work layer and applies Lighten Only mode to the top layer.
At that point, the reality diverges from the tutorial, as no change is seen with the Lighten Only mode addition (no idea HOW Lighten Only is meant to have any effect with two images with exactly the same values on each pixel). Having tried default Lighten Only mode as well as Legacy(well you never know), and then run through every other mode available (well you never know), I'm stuck as to the solution - other than v2.6 was A Long Time Ago and we do things differently now.

So. Can anybody suggest how the effect shown in the tutorial is produced?
(apart from the tutor fudging the results, of course. I mean; who'd DO a thing like that?)

Is there a way to require a click when panning canvas?
Posted by: tuna-can - 10-05-2018, 07:13 PM - Forum: Gimp 2.10 - Replies (1)

Hello!

I've recently moved back to using Arch after using Windows for a few years and I've become quite used to Photoshop.

Quick question: Is there any way to require a click to pan the can along with holding the space bar?

GIMP crashing systematically with large files
Posted by: deadshade - 10-05-2018, 10:10 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (8)

I have a really crippling problem (2.8 user)
I am working on a large topographic file which is 22 000 x 22 000 . Gimp is saying 4 GO and some when I load it . My RAM is 32 GO .
Now what I need is to isolate a part of this picture (about 5 000 x 3000) .
Whatever I try (cutting off , doing a transparent or white selection) when I want to save the result , GIMP crashes to desktop with no error message .

I will not be able to finish my work if I cannot get this small 5000x300 part what makes me desperate .
Can anybody here help me with explaining what is happening (I have obviously more than enough RAM so why would GIMP want to crash ?) and how I could solve the problem ?
Many thanks in advance .

Incomplete installation :( - Gimp 2.10/Linux Mint (Sylvia)
Posted by: drpeppercan - 10-05-2018, 12:41 AM - Forum: Linux and other Unixen - Replies (1)

Hi all,

I followed the commands given at the Gimp web site (flatpak install https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.g...flatpakref, and flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP//stable)

Then the only one item I have been able to find is its shortcut in the main menu.

I did a search in the Terminal to no avail:

Code:
/home $ find /home GIMP
find: ‘GIMP’: No such file or directory

I also did a seach with the File Browser. I did find the .config dir, but there's no GIMP dir inside.

After using this new installation of Gimp some more, I found out that the filters do not do a thing!
I guess this might suggest that the installation did not include a plug ins folder. After all, I can't find the GIMP 2.10 dir anywhere. I wonder how's running this version.
I opened the properties window of the shortcut from the main menu. It shows this path:
/usr/bin/flatpak run --branch=stable --arch=x86_64 --command=gimp-2.10 --file-forwarding org.gimp.GIMP @@u %U @@

Any ideas?
Thanks!

What is the deal with GimpForums.com ?
Posted by: Ofnuts - 10-04-2018, 09:01 PM - Forum: Gimp-Forum.net - Replies (2)

This post/topic is an answer to questions posted elsewhere.

Warning: possibly some prejudice ahead.

  • GimpForums.com (GF.c) used to be one of the leading Gimp forums, which, with all due modesty, I'll ascribe to Rich's and I continued efforts (as well as a few others').
  • However we weren't the owners, and the only person with full admin rights didn't really care about the day-to-day operations.
  • In September 2016 GF crashed and the owner/admin never showed up to repair it
  • So, after a month Rich, Kevin, and I joined efforts to create Gimp-Forum.net (G-F.n) to replace it
  • However, 6 months later, GF.c was restarted, likely to milk its popularity with search engines (a popular site name is worth money (several thousands dollars), using a backup from... 2014.
  • Given the low level of consideration we received from the GF.c owner ("benevolent idiots" could be an understatement), we decided not post again on GF.c , to stop moderate it, and to put banners all over the place pointing here. In addition I removed all the content I had authored over the years (around 25% of the total)(*).
  • Due to lack of maintenance/moderation (you can't efficiently fight spam without having full admin rights) GF.c has become a spammer's nest.
  • At the end of September 2018 (nearly two years after it creation), G-F.n passed GF.c in estimated traffic on Alexa.com.
(*) a couple of TamperMonkey macros, 20 minutes to remove 7000+ posts IIRC. PM me if you are interested Smile

Rotate Tool - Why Does the Grid Rotate?
Posted by: DavidCheshire - 10-04-2018, 04:06 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

When using the rotate tool, an overlay grid appears. This would be very useful to line up the thing being rotated to get it exactly square, but the grid itself also rotates.

Why does it do this, and is it possible to stop the grid turning?
