Gimp 2.10.6 fails to start on Kubuntu 18.04
Posted by: alpreston - 08-23-2018, 05:23 AM - Forum: Gimp 2.10 - Replies (8)

I've just installed gimp 2.10.6 on Kubuntu 18.04 from the ppa.launchpad.net/otto-kesselgulasch/gimp/ubuntu repository, but when I try to start it I get a pop-up with the following message:

     GdkPixbuf version too old!

GIMP requires GdkPixbuf version 2.30.8 or later.  Installed GdkPixbuf version is 2.30.7.

Somehow you or your software packager managed
to install GIMP with an older GdkPixbuf version.

Please upgrade to GdkPixbuf version 2.30.8 or later.

however, according to synaptic, the version of gdkpixbuf on my system is 2.36.11-2....

I tried starting it from a console, and the pop-up was preceded by the following message:

     ~$ gimp
Missing fast-path babl conversion detected, Implementing missing babl fast paths
accelerates GEGL, GIMP and other software using babl, warnings are printed on
first occurance of formats used where a conversion has to be synthesized
programmatically by babl based on format description

     *WARNING* missing babl fast path(s): "Y u16" to "Y' u8"
     GEGL-Message: 23:05:49.279: Module '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gegl-0.4/pixbuf.so'
load error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gegl-0.4/pixbuf.so: undefined symbol: gdk_pixbuf_read_pixels

does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

How to imitate this kind of sketch effect?
Posted by: Spottyfriend - 08-22-2018, 06:57 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

I'm looking to make a spoof, as so many before me have done, of this image. How would I go about altering a photo/detailed illustration of a face such that it resembles the faces in this image?

I've tried various things with edge-detection but it always leads to an over-detailed image. I'm a bit of a newbie so I really don't know where to go from here....

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

  ofn-text-along-path (multi)
Posted by: Espermaschine - 08-22-2018, 02:24 PM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (3)

I can not get this to work and it doesnt seem to be explained in the doc.

Does the skeleton path have to be a single path or multiple ? (im guessing single).

When i call up the multi text along path, it doesnt look like in this screenshot and i cant put multiple lines in the simple text along path dialogue...

instead it looks like this, but when i press okay after i inserted several lines, nothing happens

How do I add a color layer + put text on top
Posted by: enginestar - 08-21-2018, 11:19 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I have an image.
I want to put another layer on top - say white or black.
On top of this layer, I want to put text.

What's the best way of doing this?

I thought it would be simple.
But I'm struggling.
I've started by created a new image. Then color the background. Then copy and past onto the image. And then add text on top.

I seem to be going wrong. I'm struggling to resize the layer or cut a bottom or top part off.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

Question Newbie and Wondering if I can do this?
Posted by: GroovyGrandmama - 08-21-2018, 06:16 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

Last night i had a dream, and there was a very vivid image in the dream of a tree with a huge beating heart in the middle of it and the limbs of the tree's were transparent so that you could see blood pumping through them.  Could i make this image with gimp?  I've used it before for logo's etc, but never for something this detailed.  Is there something (a book or video?) that you could suggest that would give the skills to be able to do this?  This was such a powerful dream, i have to create this image.

  Paintbrushing Eraser!
Posted by: halligant - 08-21-2018, 08:11 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hello,
I've just downloaded Gimp 2.10.4 and the eraser acts like a paintbrush filling the image with colour.
I know there is a procedure for resolving this but I've forgotten it. Can someone please enlighten me,
                                                                                                                     Yours,

Anti-Aliasing on white text causes green outline
Posted by: ComicSads - 08-21-2018, 01:19 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

I want to have some white text on a transparent background so I can composite it into a different program with poor text support.
Whenever I try to do this with anti-aliasing on the text enabled, I get a green outline around the text for no apparent reason.
Please help and thanks in advance!

Information:
Using gimp 2.8.22
Font used in image is FreeSans, but the bug occurs with any font I use
Does not appear to happen if I use the brush tool
(It's difficult to see in the attached photo, but the area surrounding the text is transparent.)

  Oilify 25 minutes?

I ran Oilify (G'MIC) on a 8688x5792 image (with a new, powerful computer) and it took 25 minutes? Should something like that take as long?

Posted by: lerugray - 08-20-2018, 07:39 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

Hello all

I downloaded a font that has NATO military map symbols, essentially like wingdings but for map markings, my problem is, that every time I type something into gimp when using the font, it shows up as a letter, everywhere else I use the font it shows up as the intended icon, help! attached is the font

  Add Outline / Sticker Effect
Posted by: dmwhipp - 08-20-2018, 04:00 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

I would like to learn how to add an outline effect to images and fonts as seen in the example -- not around each letter, but around the entire word, for a sticker-like effect.

Desired outline effect result:
