oval gradient |

I would like to create an oval gradient. Kind of like the radial gradient except it radiates out in an oval shape instead of a perfect circle.
If there is no such thing as an oval gradient, then perhaps there's a gradient that fills an oval shaped selection. Can this be done?

Color profile verses working space |

When I open a photograph stored in .tif format a dialogue box (see attached file) opens asking if I want to convert to RBG working space. The message says the file has an embedded color profile identified as "sRBG v1.31 (Canon)". It seems to be asking if I want to convert to something called "sRGB IEC61966-2.1".
It sort of looks like the choice is between 2 versions of sRGB where I have no idea what the difference might be but do think that the embedded profile might be one associated with my camera by its' manufacturer (i.e., Canon). I also own a photo printer which is also manufactured by Canon. Insofar as one of the uses of the the results of any editing done by GIMP is to print, I can't think of any reason to do this conversion. What am I missing?
BTW I did experiment with both options (Convert & Keep) and output files exported to .tif format seem to retain the choosen option. In that, there is no conversion done when the file is exported. The differences on my display which is a moderately good (27" 1920x1080) one (but has not been calibrated) are imperceptible.

1. Custom toolbar possible? 2. Images often don't show up in monitor in Win... (?) |

2 issues that have for years kept me from using GIMP fully:
1. I have never been able to find out how to create a custom toolbar in GIMP, as can be done in PSP and, I believe, PhotoShop. GIMP doesn't even have a main toolbar and it's a serious, serious lack with the repetitive mouse movements instead of one-click operations when there is a custom toolbar.
Is this possible to do in GIMP? If so, what is it called, or where is it located so I can start searching for means to, please? I have never found any reference and find that the native interface seriously lacks something like this. I'm hoping that it's just because it has a name other than "custom toolbar" ...
2. In Windows XP and now in Windows 10, despite upgrading to newer versions of GIMP throughout the years, as well as being on two different operating systems (WinXP, Win10) and two completely different monitors and graphics cards, when I load images in GIMP, more often than not they disappear from view. The images are there and are 'selectable', they just aren't visible.
This has never happened in either version of Linux Mint's I've used (LM 17, Rafaella before, I think it was, and now LM Sylvia 18. I am using now).
I'd like to know what it is in Windows that interferes with GIMP, if anyone knows? I use Portable GIMP for Windows and tried it on two different computers at work over the years, as well, btw, and the same thing happened on those PCs. I'm hoping very much it's a known bug with a fix ... (?)
These 2 things are what stop me completely every time when using GIMP. But now that Win10 is also not launching either PSP8 or PSP9, I must make the switch to GIMP once and for all.
------
Hopefully someone knows of a solution to #1 above as I'm again trying to migrate to Linux Mint but his time permanently as Windows 10 is absolutely the worst Windows it's been my misfortune to have to use!
As for #2, would be nice to know as I will still retain WinXP on my dual boot Notebook and it'll be nice to get GIMP to work when in WinXP even if I also have the Linux version on there, too.
Thanks all! Much appreciated.
(p.s., custom toolbars such as these are what I'm referring to in #1, above - I'm attaching more than one as links sometimes don't all open for everyone:

I seem to have lost the Plastic or Glass plugin and the gimp registry site seems to be down. I'm using GIMP 2.8.22.
I'd be extremely grateful if somebody could upload the plugin or point me to a site that has it. Thanks in advance.

Help is opening in a TEXT EDITOR |

How does gimp choose the app for viewing help? I do not have webkit, so I need an external browser. Even though I set the default app for text/html, text/xml, and application/xml to kfmclient (konqueror), gimp help always open in a TEXT EDITOR, which is the stupidest thing it could do.
I checked that
xdg-open /usr/share/gimp/2.0/help/en/index.html
does indeed open in konqueror, as desired.
The only thing that works so far is to uninstall the text editor, which again is the stupidest thing to do.

Gimp Tool Box and Tool Options Remain on Desktop |

I am running Windows 10 x64 Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.192) with Gimp Version 2.8.22. All are up to date. When I close Gimp program, the Toolbox and the Tool Options remain on my desktop and finally close in 15 to 30 seconds. Is this normal, or is there a setting to stop this? It is not a big problem, but is a little distracting and if it can be changed, I would really appreciate knowing the solution. Thanks.

How to get paint tool to stop at selection borders |

Hello,
Please have a look at the following screen shot:

I prepared the selection so that I could click the paint tool between the two wavy lines and have it fill only between those lines.
But this is what happened:

Not only did it paint between the lines, but outside as well.
I was expecting the paint tool to propagate from the point where I clicked until it hit borders, those borders being both the lines I drew an the borders of the selection. It seem it did stop painting beyond the selection border, but then continued propagating until it got to the region outside the lines inside the selection, and then started painting again.
How do I configure the paint to stop propagating once it hits selection borders as well as lines drawn in the layer?
Thanks.
