  configuring grid
Posted by: lemonphenomenon - 07-30-2017, 10:36 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

I usually want a grid that will divide the image into fixed proportions, horizontally and vertically: for instance, 7 equally spaced vertical and 7 horizontal lines, so the image is divided into 1/8ths. Is it possible to configure a grid that way, ie by proportion of the whole image rather than by pixels, inches or whatever?

Anything but .XCF gets "Unknow Filetype" error
Posted by: beachboui - 07-30-2017, 04:43 AM - Forum: Installation and usage - Replies (3)

Need help!

Just installed 2.8.22.  Gimp will not recognize any graphic file type other than it's native .XCF extension. It won't open any other file type (.jpg, .gif, .png, etc), and it won't export to any other file type. In fact, no other file type extensions are even listed in the "Select filetype (by extension) menu.

I also noticed that the installation did not add a Gimp folder to the Start Menu. There is a shortcut to launch Gimp, but no folder under All Programs. It seems like there should be a Gimp program folder.

My OS is Win 7, 64-bit.

How can I fix the "unknown filetype" issue? Any help?

  Plug-in: plugin-heal-selection.py
Posted by: RStJohn - 07-29-2017, 06:46 PM - Forum: Gimp 2.10 - Replies (3)

GIMP VER: 2.9.5 CCE
oP sys w10 64

When I run plugin-heal-selection.py, I get this:

GIMP-CCE Message

WARNING: Plug-In "plugin-heal-selection.py"
(C:\Users\Rich\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.9\plug-ins\plugin-heal-selection.py)
called deprecated procedure 'gimp-selection-combine'.
It should call 'gimp-image-select-item' instead!

This, I think, is the offending line: pdb.gimp_selection_combine(orgSelection, CHANNEL_OP_SUBTRACT)
It works, however, the above message box appears and the selection 'ants' remain (no big deal) in the image.

I've tried editing the script with the indicated fix but it fails when run. I am a complete novice with python. So if someone here can fix and update it you could be a hero.
Any ideas?

Bug Wacom-tablet click the "transform" button, and GIMP crashes.
Posted by: SenlinOS - 07-29-2017, 12:27 AM - Forum: Installation and usage - Replies (4)

GIMP-git (2.9.5)

1 Edit > Input Devices
wacom-Pen stylus, Mode: Screen

2 Edit > Preferences
Image Windows - Appearance
Uncheck: Show rulers

3 Restart GIMP

4 Use Unified Transform Tool
Wacom-tablet click the "transform" button, and GIMP crashes.
The terminal display is "Segmentation fault".
(I can't find more information!)

All transform tools, using the Enter key, can work properly.

Hope everyone in the forum can find more information.

Find Waldo (little pic) in Where is Waldo (large pic)
Posted by: 2083389396 - 07-28-2017, 01:07 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

I have two pictures. One is a huge Waldo picture, for example this one:

http://www.playbuzz.com/tarasc10/wheres-...u-find-him

The other one is a tiny little picture with Waldo, it was cut from that large picture and saved as an individual pic. Can I somehow feed GIMP with both pictures, instead of searching for the little Waldo picture with my eyes for hours? Gimp should kind of tell me or mark the position or whatever to show me where that little pic in is in the large one.

Thanks!

  New user-Gimp not working right?
Posted by: xphnmn - 07-27-2017, 02:13 PM - Forum: Windows - Replies (5)

Could someone help an old guy that's just beginning photo editing? I loaded Gimp 2.8 onto my Windows 10 computer for the purpose of restoring some old family photos. Before I loaded it I watched a number of tutorials on You Tube and it seemed pretty straightforward especially to do the type of repairs I need to do (remove tears, creases, blotches and etc using the clone tool and/or heal tool. After downloading Gimp and putting it in single screen mode I opened a photo that has a couple of tears and some writing on it to repair the tears and remove the writing. Before I tried any repairs I saved the picture to my desktop as a Gimp Project and then closed the original file and opened the project file. After selecting an area to work on, I clicked on the clone tool and tried using it to remove some of the writing. I first selected an area to clone using CTRL click and then clicked on some of the writing. Nothing happened! I tried it several times even closing and reopening the project but still nothing. I switched to the heal tool, repeated the procedure and still nothing. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Combining gif image to static image help?
Posted by: littlegreendog - 07-26-2017, 07:47 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hey everyone, I need some help with something.

I have this image here: https://s11.postimg.org/d6talfl37/banner.png

And I have this gif image here of falling snow: https://68.media.tumblr.com/642db6d043ae...o1_500.gif

I'd like to place the gif image on the static image (on the right hand side), but I want the snow to be "blending" into the background. Like, I don't want the blackness behind the snow to show, I only want the snow effect. Like how an overlay would look.

But no matter what I do, I can't get this to work. I see a lot of people being able to achieve something like this but I have yet to learn. I tried duplicating the background and overlaying the gif into each one of the backgrounds but that didn't work.

What am I supposed to do?

  Gimp 2.9.5 Smudge tool
Posted by: rich2005 - 07-26-2017, 09:13 AM - Forum: Gimp 2.10 - No Replies

The occasional report on Gimp 2.9.5 features.

The Smudge tool now has a painting capability.

It first came up here as: http://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Customi...h-painting and has now been implemented.

As a non-painter the basics are

Using the new parameter flow rate = 0 the smudge tool acts as before.
Increase the flow rate and the smudge tool takes the foreground colour and blends with the underlying colour.

Comparison: Previous dialogue is on the left and smudge tool vs. paintbrush. Going to need a 4k monitor before long for tool options. Wink

There is a bit more to than that.
No erasing effect = 'never decrease the alpha of existing pixels'
That gradient selection under dynamics which is also in other paint tools.

  Is it possible....
Posted by: sallyanne - 07-25-2017, 03:18 AM - Forum: Windows - Replies (9)

...to install another gimp onto your computer without having to remove the one you already have set up.
I want one that only has the original files in it as well. Can I do it by using a different file name for one or would I need to get a portable.
I use windows 32bit btw.
Just tried to do a custom installation for a new one but it just updated the one I have already.

I want a plain one as well.
