Trying to import a 16-bit grayscale .dds (heightmap) without converting to 8-bit
Posted by: mikusingularity - 09-24-2020, 10:46 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

I am trying to modify a 8192 x 4096 16-bit .dds heightmap of the Earth, but whenever I import it, it always converts to 8-bit. Is there any way I can import without it becoming 8-bit? Or if GIMP cannot do that, which program can?

Gaussian blur not working when I change image to black
Posted by: Nadia - 09-23-2020, 11:28 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

Hi there,

I'm trying to create a shadow for my photo, so I copied and pasted it as a new layer and coloured it black. Normally I just select gaussian blur and it changes it to a shadowier image, but for some reason it's just not working. If I keep it as a pasted layer without turning it black, the Gaussian filter works. I've tried applying the filter, then colouring it black but it just goes back to a solid block colour.

Any advice would be massively appreciated!

Thanks,

Nadia

  Resolution Issue
Posted by: derliebesmuskel - 09-22-2020, 09:02 PM - Forum: Windows - No Replies

A couple weeks ago the display settings for GIMP somehow changed. The display resolution seems to have altered somehow and now all toolboxes, icons, etc are VERY small (to the point of being nearly unusable). I have tried uninstalling 2.10 three times now. I even uninstalled .10 and reinstalled .8 and .8 has the same issue. I cannot find what file has been edited to create this issue. I've literally searched my drive and deleted anything with the name GIMP in it, but I cannot get my computer to the point as though it has never seen the program before. Does anyone have any idea how I can COMPLETELY delete GIMP and EVERYTHING related to it from my PC (other than formatting the drive Dodgy ) or a way to manually edit the display resolution for GIMP? Thanks for any help.

EDIT:
So, I've been messing around for the past couple hours and have found a work-around, but if anyone has a true solution, please let me know.

In case anyone is interested: as a temporary work-around I had to lower my system resolution by about half (to double the apparent size), then used the Windows display to scale the view back down. Then go into the program files and properties for the GIMP executable. From there I could disable the Windows scaling (compatibility tab - change high DPI settings).

Changing background of image without hiding the text
Posted by: LittleFrog - 09-22-2020, 04:23 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hi, I'm new here, and I'm hoping you can help me.  I'm new to GIMP, and I was wondering how I would go about changing the red background of the sign in the image to the flag in the other image without covering over the text on the sign?  Thanks in advance.

Sad Need Help: Gimp 2.10.20 keeps automatically switching to 3D Transform tool :(
Posted by: jrkoop - 09-22-2020, 02:59 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hi, I'm a happy Gimp user. My version of Gimp, 2.10.20, keeps automatically switching to the 3D Transform tool. in the middle of work, when I'm using another tool Sad

This is incredibly annoying and many times interrupts my workflow, especially when I'm doing a task that is detailed, takes focus, and takes time. All of a sudden, in the middle of such a task, my currently selected tool annoyingly and automatically switches to the 3D Transform tool. Then I have to undo, reselect the correct tool or worse, sometimes reselect the area I was working on and then going back to the previous tool. In other words, this is becoming a huge time sink to the point where this version of Gimp is almost unusable (which makes me sad).

Anyway, is there a setting I'm not seeing or missing? Is there a way to prevent this? Should I downgrade to an older version? Your expertise is much appreciated. Thank you.

Removal of all but selected colors
Posted by: krummelt1 - 09-22-2020, 01:57 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

Hello everyone

Let me start by saying my editing ability is minimal at best.  Big thanks to anyone who helps a rookie out.  Hopefully this stuff is easy for y'all out there.

I am trying to take a JPG of a trail map and extract everything with the exception of the Trail and lift lines.  So far I have used "Selection by Color Select" and then been able to extract a majority of the lines.  This is where I run into a few problems that I feel like some better knowledge of the GIMP tools would help.  So here are the problems I am wrestling with.

1.  The color select also grabs a lot of random pixels of the same color resulting in dots all over.  Is there some way to filter these out?

2.  The lines it does grab are pretty good but on the edges where the lines might have a SLIGHTLY different color , those lines get fuzzy.  Is there some sort of automated process I can use to make the lines that were grabbed more consistent and more bold (like the example)?

I can't post my current progress at the moment but I was hoping to get the discussion started.

Thanks so much for the help.

TJ

Foreground Select - Any Way to Save and Resume Editing Laterme
Posted by: TMORT - 09-21-2020, 05:05 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I have a high resolution and kind of large picture.  It is a panorama  made from several pictures.

I'm trying to use the foreground select to turn the background to alpha.  I thought I had it done, and when I went to preview it a message box popped up saying calculating unknown pixels and the hard drive was active for quite a while and then GIMP crashed.

I think this may have been because the background was basically the sky and I just put my foreground select lines along the edges of where the background and the foreground intersected.  However, it did mask the photo and allow me to use the brush tool, etc.

I thought I'd see if I could do it in stages and do just one corner, but I see the mask extended beyond where I had my Foreground Select lines.  So it doesn't look like that is an option.  I also tried a different picture and did connect all the foreground select lines and had brushed only part of the picture and then saved it.  It  did save, but I could resume editing where I left off.  Maybe I can but I am missing something.

I guess I could use Foreground Select on the individual pictures the panorama is stitched together from.

I'm wondering if there are any good techniques for doing this?

TIA

for what it's worth, I'm running GIMP 2.10.20 on a new install of Linux Mint 20. I installed the new GIMP because I couldn't find the image tool menu on the earlier version when I tried to use the fuzzy select tool.  It is the menu that has feather edges, mask and some other settings.  I couldn't find it on the new version either.  Maybe I just don't know how to display it.

  MathMap for Linux
Posted by: rich2005 - 09-21-2020, 02:14 PM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (10)

MathMap - A Gimp plugin see: https://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/mathmap/ A new compilation tested in 'buntu 18.04 / 20.04 / Mint19 / 20 regular Gimp and Gimp-Appimage 2.10.x

Installation:
Download the zip from: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=...yMfS1SkfGy
Unzip and put the folder mathmap in  ~./GIMP/2.10/  and the plugin mathmap-full in  ~./GIMP/2.10/plug-ins (or the equivalent  ~./GIMP-Appimage/2.10/... )

There are dependencies which are probably not installed. In a terminal run

Code:
sudo apt install libgtksourceview2.0-0 libgsl23

Use: The plugin installs in Filters -> Generic -> MathMap   A very quick example https://i.imgur.com/K9oP1o9.mp4 using Mint20

The usual guarantee: there is none.

how can I make GIF over a static image?
Posted by: kenny1999 - 09-21-2020, 12:44 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (18)

Hi
I am not expecting very professional work, just want to do it for fun. So I hope the
steps aren't too complicated...

I want to make an image of dinosaur walking around in the background of a place.

As a result, I think I'll first need to create a GIF image of dinosaur walking around.

And then, to put the GIF image on top of a static image (the place)

Would anyone suggest me the simplest way to do so??

Just for fun, not expecting too detailed.... Thanks
