Select tools act as move tool
Posted by: reddbrad - 01-22-2017, 06:23 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

I'm using GIMP 2.8.18 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I've been using GIMP for years and have never had a glitch. Today, I can't use the select tools. I click on one of the select tools and, instead, I get the move tool. I rebooted my machine. I tried resetting the tools to the default settings. I removed GIMP and reinstalled it but nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

While our friends from GimpChat are waiting for it's return, here's a couple of photos for you to play with.

I have no particular requirements, just see what you are inspired to do with them.

  Gimp 2.8.20 ?
Posted by: rich2005 - 01-21-2017, 09:47 AM - Forum: Watercooler - No Replies

There is a Gimp 2.8.20 described here

https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/plain/NEWS?h=gimp-2-8

and via gimpusers (Alexandre Prokoudine)

"...We expect to ship v2.10 later this year with 16/32-bit per color channel precision, basic OpenEXR support, new and updated tools, UI updates, and many more changes..."

Maybe, providing they get their layer modes sorted.

  Levels histogram
Posted by: throwcode - 01-20-2017, 07:25 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

Hi everybody,

I'm using GIMP 2.8.18 and when I have an image selected and I open the Color/Levels view it does NOT include a histogram.  In my Internet searches there is always a histogram produced.  Is there away to turn this property on?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

[Solved] Variables & math in entry widgets?
Posted by: jules - 01-20-2017, 09:23 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

Hello there,

I use calculations when, for example, I'm feathering a selection (e.g., 1800/3). And that works great.

But I'm wondering is there a variable that gives me the height or width of the image so that I don't have to enter that it's 1800, 5100, etc.  I'd like to be able to put in the feather selection input widget something like - HEIGHT/3 or WIDTH/3 or MAX_DIMENSION/3.  Is this possible?

Are there variables that you can use in the maths in entry widgets?

Many thanks,
Jules

  How to Separate/Select Different Grays
Posted by: Perodin - 01-19-2017, 10:23 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

I work in a small retail shop and take a lot of photos that involve "clear" packaging, and scans that have a natural gradient behind or through the product. There is a visual difference in the grays to the eye, but all manner of auto selects fail. Is there a decent way to get a hold of these backgrounds so I can white out or at the least normalize them? My goal is to utilize a "faster" method, because I can't spend too long on any given item. I am aware of limited masking and contrast tricks, but not seeming to find a good solution. Attached is one of the raw images I start with.

  When suddenly nothing works anymore
Posted by: Ofnuts - 01-19-2017, 01:42 PM - Forum: Tutorials and tips - Replies (4)

There are several situations where you may wonder why some tools do not work. Here are some things to check:

  • Many tools (for instance, the paint tools) only apply to the "selection" and if you have a selection the effect of these tools is restricted to the selected pixels. In some cases a very small selection is created by mistake, so painting in most parts of the image does nothing. This is easy to check: in the "Select" menu, "Select/All" and Select/None" are both available when there is a selection on part of the image. Click "Select/None" to remove the unwanted selection.
  • Tools apply to the selected layer, so check in the Layers list (Ctrl-L) that the right layer is selected (blue highlight). Tools also have no effect outside of the selected layer boundaries if this layer is smaller than the canvas (you can enlarge it with "Layer/Layer to image size")
  • A corollary to the two items above, if the selection and the active layer have no common pixels, nothings happens.
  • Locked pixels cannot be altered. Check the pixel-lock and alpha-lock status of your layer at the top of the Layer list.
  • Many filters only work on RGB images, and the corresponding menus will be disabled/grayed if you have a grayscale or indexed image. The type of the image is next to its name in the title bar, and can also be checked in the "Image/Mode" menu.
  • The tools in the "Colors" menu do not work on indexed images (GIF images are color-indexed), but nothing makes that obvious, the tools just seem broken in that case.
  • If you have a "floating selection" ("Edit/paste", or after using transform tools with a selection active) many operations are forbidden until this floating selection is either "anchored" or transformed into a plain layer. The floating selection is visible in the Layers list.
  • Paint tools may be put in a "paint mode" that has little effect on the pixels you are using. Check that that the paint mode is "Normal" unless you really want it otherwise.
  • Check the brush you are using. If set to the 'clipboard', the clipboard contents may have changed. Try with another brush.
  • Check the tool opacity
  • Check the layer opacity
  • On the Paintbrush, check the "Force" setting
  • Check the "Dynamics" settings (set to "Dynamics off" until you know better)
