  French Olympics

I've given the Gimp 2.10.38 appimage a good workout and it's very stable. The difference between fuse-overlay-fs and kernel overlay has been reduced to one line of code.

I improved Mathmap on Ubuntu so if people are interested the newest files are here:

The French must be getting excited about the Olympics. I remember the Sydney Olympics in 2000. I was driving taxis (pre-uber) and thought I would make a lot of money. I made the same because they designed the events around public transport. I did meet people from all around the globe and that was good.

Pretty much underwhelmed so far. They have engineered a hike on prices of public transport for the duration of the Games. They have evicted students from their social housing to make room for athletes (instead of building rooms for athletes that can later become social housing for students). Downtown Paris will be mostly closed up for the general populace. People who thought they could rake €€€ with their apartments are still looking for guests. And tickets sales aren't that good (and abysmal for the Paralympics).

In other words we aren't inviting the Games, we are invaded by them.

  Convert Color
Posted by: FAMOsa - 05-27-2024, 09:48 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I have been using gimp to manipulate images of my paintings.  I take a picture of the painting with my iPhone, convert it to JPEG, and then upload it to gimp to straighten, crop, etc.  It always asks me if I want to convert to to sRGB or something like that.  The default is to convert, so I do.  However I was wondering what the difference was and/or if there is a tutorial that teaches what these conversions mean and how to choose the best options for your project.

Thank you in advance.

Exclamation Scribus CMYK PDF - Save as
Posted by: Krikor - 05-27-2024, 08:11 PM - Forum: Other graphics software - Replies (2)

Hi,

Inkscape V 1.3.2
Scribus V 1.6.1

Having an .svg file open in Inkscape (it can be just an object, in the form of Path), using a color profile (the same in both inkscape and scribus); when I choose:
File - Save as - type (Scribus CMYK PDF (*.PDF) and click OK in the window that appears, I get the following error:

I'm not sure, but I think that before I updated Inkscape and installed it on HD C:/, the whole thing worked.

Would I also have to install Scribus on HD c:/ (currently Scribus is on HD E:/

Any help is greatly appreciated :-)

Question Open with GIMP
Posted by: Krikor - 05-27-2024, 07:18 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hey guys,

Using the Samj portable version since the beginning of the GIMP 2.10 version I have always started the program via a shortcut on the desktop whose destination is:
C:\Gimp-2.10.28_Portable_32-64bit-Win\GIMP_EN.exe (*)

Which is what the image below corresponds to.

I can never open GIMP any other way.

If there is, for example, an image in the Windows file manager that I want to open in GIMP and I indicate this path (*) an error window appears on the screen:

Using Scribus it is possible to choose GIMP to edit images opened in the Scribus image frame. To do this, simply enter the GIMP path in one of the program's preferences options. But if I provide the same path (*) that I use to open GIMP, the same error window appears again.  Sad

The only way I've found to open GIMP, either through Scribus or through the file manager, is to provide the following path:
C:\Gimp-2.10.28_Portable_32-64bit-Win\bin

But in this case, the GIMP that opens appears without the plugins and scripts that I use daily, and also using the operating system language (not English).   None of my customizations are present.  Dodgy

Is there any way to avoid the error screen and open GIMP using the GIMP_EN.exe option, which is the one I use and has all my settings / plugins / scripts?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Guys, I hope you can help. I imported a KDP book template into Gimp 2.10.38. Sized my book front cover as 480px x 768px or 5" x 8". When I dragged and dropped the front cover PNG onto the template in Gimp it was way too small. How do I get the picture cover as a PNG format to fit the template?

  Extended ruler

If the 'Measure Tool' in gimp is not satisfactory for you, then the 'MB-Ruler may be a solution for you. The free version for private use offers many options and you can use it for free for an unlimited time. The pro version has more options, but you have to pay for them.

GIMP odd behaviour Some parts don't work
Posted by: jeanlinux - 05-27-2024, 05:41 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (10)

Hello everyone,

Nice to meet the group. This is my first post. Hope I am doing things the right way !

I have recently noticed that in the COLOUR list of possibilities a great many are not operating any more, except Contrast/ Levels and Curves. How come?

My first idea was to un-install the whole of GIMP and re-install. But it was to no avail.

I'm at a loss what to do.

My OS is Windows 10 -64bit, I have 16 GB or RAM.

Thank you for your help ans suggestions.

an appimage testing problem that threw me
Posted by: Tas_mania - 05-26-2024, 11:23 PM - Forum: Alternate Gimp packagings - Replies (2)

I was testing a Gimp 2.10.38 appimage on different systems. On an Ubuntu 22.04 system the appimage worked perfectly except when entering text from the text box to an image. Gimp was not logging anything typed on the keyboard but I could still type in the toolbox selection fields.

The same appimage worked on the same OS on a different machine. That was an early clue I missed. I'm pretty excitable and starting thinking this was a Gimp issue. I had never noticed you can type into the toolbox fields before.

Eventually I used info from starting Gimp from a terminal. I found Linux terminals allow 'unlimited scrollback'. It's almost unlimited but starting Gimp with heaps of old plug-ins that don't work uses a lot of unlimited scrollback Smile  One day I'll clean-up all those plug-ins.

Every time I typed in the Gimp text box and nothing happened the terminal logged an I-Bus event. I thought I-Bus must be a system utility but after googling it I remember installing it years ago. I wanted to type in Chinese on my keyboard, found it too hard and gave-up. Of course I just left I-Bus installed  Smile

What I didn't realize is IBus uses D-Bus which is started with the system and running all the time. Waiting for the day I'm testing text on an appimage. I removed I-Bus and instantly my appimage works perfectly. But first I announced on gimp-forum I had found a Gimp bug, lodged a gitlab bug report and ofnuts and rich commented that typing in a toolbox text field is normal.

So what did I learn? Linux systems properly managed are so reliable they retain your lazy mistakes for years as they keep upgrading and updating the programs you forget about. Maybe sleep on it before lodging a bug report that you have to delete the same day Smile

Don't give-up on a problem. The World always needs problem solvers because problems cost money and a lot pf people think they are not expert enough.  Problems are often solved indirectly. The guys here have solved many problems for many people and they do it for free. That's amazing!

Photo Problem with resolution
Posted by: WillyWonka - 05-26-2024, 11:45 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

Hi all!

I'm a beginner in GIMP, using a version 2.10.14. My aim is to create a set of different postcards.
I have the following problem with resolution: I found an image with a resolution 1000 by default, in 'Scale image' menu I change it to 300 dpi and to 10x15 cm the size.
Then as usual I export it in JPG format, and close the program.
In the folder in metadata I see the correct resolution and size how I set it up, but when I open this image in GIMP again, open 'Print size' menu I see a resolution 72 instead of 300, and a different size.

Could anyone please guide me what I did wrong, and how to save these options for further work with the images?
Also I'm afraid of having incorrect resolution/size because I need many copies at once and I would get incorrect postcards at the copy center.
