  Minimalism versus Bloatware
Posted by: Espermaschine - 10-15-2016, 06:44 AM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (6)

I recently cleaned up my Gimp.
Startup time was waaaaay too long for my taste and i know that i have a lot of scripts that i have no idea of what they are doing, meaning: i never use them.

Also edited a few scripts  so that they turn up in a different place where i would find them.

Had ofnut's resource manager installed some time ago, but went one step further and also put the majority of Gimp's native patterns and gradients in a resource folder.
I know that could be problematic with some of the scripts, but i dont think thats a problem in my case because i dont use the majority of one-click effects anyway.

Also deleted a ton of fonts i never use. Once you learn more about fonts, you get away from all the space fonts to a more classic and universal style.

Now everything is much more clean and tidy and i like it that way.

And to start with, im not even a big hoarder. I guess there are other users who have tons of patterns, gradients, fonts, effect scripts and plug-ins.

I hardly need any path related scripts because i make everything in Inkscape now and import it into Gimp.
In fact i think Inkscape and Gimp make such a great combination.
Loads of things that are so much easier to make in Inkscape (shapes obviously, text on a path, gradients, warped text, even kerning), while on the other hand adding texture, layermodes and filters is so much easier (and better) in Gimp.

So what does your Gimp look like ? Is it bursting with extras or do you like it clean and minimal ?

I can't Post in the Image Gallery
Posted by: steven8 - 10-15-2016, 06:22 AM - Forum: Gimp-Forum.net - Replies (13)

It won't let me post an image.  I tried the image gallery, but I get an error when I try to post.  Two different errors, actually.  One when I tried to attach an image, and one when I tried copying the image directly into the post.  Small png file.

  Coder Appreciation
Posted by: mahvin - 10-13-2016, 08:48 PM - Forum: Gallery - Replies (1)

Because GIMPers love and appreciate the coders, scripters, hackers, who selflessly devote their time and energy to creating plugins and scripts for GIMP, I introduce to you all the coveted Knights of the Golden Wilber award, presented to those whose dedication to their craft exceeds the norms and expectations of those who use them.

Anyone can dedicate and award the Golden Wilber (and you will also need to inscribed the award with the coder's name and achievement, as well).

Coders make our lives easier and more enjoyable while using GIMP. Thank you to all!

  HTTPS, Mission Statements, and More...
Posted by: patdavid - 10-13-2016, 02:55 PM - Forum: Gimp-Forum.net - Replies (3)

Howdy all!

I was wondering if there had been any thought (yet) about setting up https for the site (I've had great results with letsencrypt certs for instance)?  I was also wondering if there was a sort of "mission statement" that would clearly define the goals of the forum (like why post here vs. another place)?

I'm in the process of writing posts for social media to help spread the word for you and just wondered if these things were covered?

Also, congrats on getting things set up! Big Grin

How much do you think will Gimp 2.9 and 2.10 change everything ?
Posted by: Espermaschine - 10-13-2016, 12:27 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (21)

Played around a bit with a development version of Gimp 2.9 and was thrilled but also shocked.

The icons look all different, so i had a hard time finding my usual tools.

The on-canvas gradient live-editing is cool, although it seems that only works for your average two color gradient.

Gaussian Blur seems to use new values now, with smaller numbers as in Photoshop (whatever the technical reason behind that is).
And the on-canvas preview of the filters is great.

Im wondering how much these new features will change old tutorials.

Will Gimp 2.9 be the beginning of a new era for us all ?

My first post on this new place and I thought I'd start up a shiny new Gimp Sketchbook on here with some painting studies of ravens - any critique would be appreciated - thanks Smile.

  Testing Script attachments
Posted by: Kevin - 10-11-2016, 09:08 AM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (5)

Let's see if the forum will allow me to attach a script-fu .scm file

Please correct the following errors before continuing:

  • The type of file that you attached is not allowed. Please remove the attachment or choose a different type.
And Python .py ?

Please correct the following errors before continuing:
  • The type of file that you attached is not allowed. Please remove the attachment or choose a different type.
And a Zip:

.zip   kp24_test_for_duplicate_scripts_1_8.zip (Size: 6.29 KB / Downloads: 632)

And 7z:

Please correct the following errors before continuing:
  • The type of file that you attached is not allowed. Please remove the attachment or choose a different type.
So in conclusion, only .zip is allowed.

The time is about 0900 GMT for ofnuts log

The problem with gimp format images is on my installation.
My regular browser, slimjet will download a something.xcf or something.xcfgz but konqueror does give an option. XnView works for most formats including xcf but not for xcfgz / xcfbz2
Would I normally want to open an image in Gimp, while I am browsing probably not, download for later which I suspect most will do.

No-one tried a tif, here goes LZW compressed tif

ahh..
Please correct the following errors before continuing:

  • The type of file that you attached is not allowed. Please remove the attachment or choose a different type

This is the same saved as a xcfgz, both about the same size.

  Passionflower wigglegram

Caution: 2.3MB animated GIF ahead

http://i.imgur.com/1szrbbb.gif

  • Take two lucky shots of a passionflower (a windgust made it turn away a bit when I was taking a bunch of closeups).
  • Load both in Gimp
  • Set top one to half transparent and adjust position so that they overlap reasonably
  • Apply my progressive-merge script to progressively blend one image into the other
  • Apply my mirror-layers script to generate the "back" sequence
