  How to make a circle or ellipse image
Posted by: Ofnuts - 09-30-2017, 08:21 AM - Forum: Tutorials and tips - No Replies

Word of caution: there are no circular images. There are images where corners are transparent, so that only a circle shows.

First make sure that your layer has an "alpha channel" (menu: Layer/Transparency/Add alpha channel)(if it's grayed out, it means you already have one)

Then create a circular selection ("Ellipse select tool", the 2nd one in the toolbox). You can check the "Tool options" dialog: menu: Windows/Dockable dialogs/Tool options (top of list). If you want a true circle, check the "Fixed" option, select "Aspect ratio' and enter "1:1". Depending on what kind of marks you have, you can use the diagonal framing (default) where you click one corner, and release at the opposite diagonal corner, or the radial one (check "Expand from center" in the Tool options) where you click where you want the center of the circle and release where you want the border.

Once the selection is done, you can move it (click around the middle) or extend it (click inside, but close to the sides).

One you are have the required selection, invert the selection, so that everything is selected, except your circle: menu: Select/Invert (or Ctrl-I)

Erase the selection (menu: Edit/clear or "Delete" key). You should have your central circle left, surrounded by a checkerboard pattern.

Reduce the checkerboard to the minimum by auto-cropping the image (menu: image/autocrop image)

Export the image in a format that supports transparency, like PNG. JPEG doesn't support transparent images...

If you are going to work further on the picture, save it as XCF (Gimp native format).

  Can't change the color of inactive options in Menu bar.
Posted by: justusr846 - 09-29-2017, 11:22 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I've been making some changes to a duplicate of the default Dark theme provided by GIMP 2.9.7 via the 'gtkrc' file to suit my requirements.

Most of the UI seem fine now, but I can't find the right modifier to change the font color of the inactive options in the Menu bar (it doesn't go well with the dark theme).

However when I change the values of 'text[NORMAL]' of 'gimp-dark-list-header-style' in gtkrc from empty to any two digit hexadecimal value, the color of the menu font (active options included) and docked panels changes to white.

From the gtkrc file:

style "gimp-dark-list-header-style"

{
  #Comment out the ythickness setting below for thicker column headers.
  #ythickness = 0

  GtkTreeView::odd_row_color = "#828282"
  GtkTreeView::even_row_color = "#828282"

  #
  # set custom header text color here
  #

  #fg[NORMAL] = "#00F"
  #fg[PRELIGHT] = "#00F"
  #fg[SELECTED] = "#00F"
  #fg[INSENSITIVE] = "#00F"
  #fg[ACTIVE] = "#00F"

  #
  # set custom text color here
  #

  text[NORMAL] = "#"
  #text[PRELIGHT] = "#FF0"
  #text[SELECTED] = "#FF0"
  #text[INSENSITIVE] = "#FF0"
  #text[ACTIVE] = "#FF0"

Any value above 2 digits reverts it to the default color.

How will I be able to solve this?

Thank you beforehand for any help.   Smile

GF.n was a bit behind, software-updates-wise (like 13 successive kernel updates, 106 packages, 3 months, shame, shame, Blush ). So:

Code:
apt update
apt upgrade
*cross-fingers*
shutdown -r now

A grand total of 5 minutes and 20 seconds, and 20 seconds of forum interruption (from shutdown to forum available again).

  python-fu script no more working after gmic installation
Posted by: alvaro562003 - 09-28-2017, 08:27 AM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (7)

Hello,

I installed gimp one week ago and used python-fu for scripting. It works very well on windows-10

Yesterday, i installed gmic. It seem to work well on GUI.

Now, here comes the issue:
After having installed GMIC the python-fu script does not work anymore. I have this error message:

GIMP-Error: Unable to run plug-in "zlib1.dll"
(C:\Users\admin\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\gmic_gimp_qt\zlib1.dll)
Failed to execute child process (Exec format error)

When i delete the gmic_gimp_qt directory completely the script work again.

Thank you for you help.
My goal is to automate the script diego's pseudohdreffect http://gimpscripts.com/2016/10/pseudo-hdr-effect/ on windows 10 using python-fu

  Khan Academy Videos
Posted by: gimp_guy - 09-28-2017, 01:25 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

Hi there,

I'm looking to create educational videos for my clients similar to the Khan Academy videos (e.g. https://youtu.be/XSb3N4CM3yY).  I'm using a Wacom Intuos pen/tablet but my results are not quite as neat as in the video.  I was wondering, could you suggest what GIMP toolbox - tool options might be similar to what the author is using?

If you're able to comment on the tool type, the brush type, size, dynamics, etc that would be greatly appreciated.

  Gimp not return to multiple windows after using single window mode
Posted by: Pat625 - 09-26-2017, 12:56 AM - Forum: Windows - Replies (3)

I have had Gimp 2.8.22 for some time now without major problems but lately I notice the two tool docks hang up for about 15-30 seconds after closing the large image window.  I tried the single window mode and now I cannot get back to the multi window mode.  I have the image window, and the two tool docks are together as one.  I have not been able to break them apart.

I wonder if this has something to do with the large windows updates that I get every once in awhile.  I had one not long before this trouble with Gimp.  I use Windows 10.

Has anyone had trouble or know what to do about it?

  Diagonal oval selection
Posted by: Melodicpinpon - 09-25-2017, 11:30 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

Good afternoon, gentlemen,

I'd like to know how I can select with an oval, and rotate -not the part of the image selected- but the selection zone itself, in order to select a diagonal oval.

Thank you in advance for your kind help,

  Install gmic gimp plugin Windows 10 demo
Posted by: rich2005 - 09-25-2017, 10:18 AM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - No Replies

EDIT: This post was originally for Gimp 2.8.x

For Gimp 2.10.x the gmic_gimp_qt Windows installer works without any modifications.

A 2 minute video here for anyone who has difficulties. https://youtu.be/fTlqYbY-oIA

-------------------------
This is strictly beginner stuff.

The advice for installing compiled plugins, filename.exe is put the plugin along with any associated somefile.dll files directly into the Gimp profile C:\Users\yourname\.gimp-28\plug-ins

There is the occasional plugin that comes with an installer. Some such as BIMP install directly to the main Gimp file structure. Never a good idea when you come to uninstall. Very easy to delete more (or leave behind parts) of the plugin.

Then there is G'mic. http://www.gmic.eu
Very popular, comes with a host of filters, some 470. With the development of the QT interface the installer now creates a new folder to contain, which in the Windows version, is a sizeable number of files.

My advice, until you get a bit more experienced, stick with the defaults.

The default installation folder is: C:\Users\yourname\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\gmic_gimp_qt

To enable gimp to use the plugin, the path to that location needs adding to the plugins path in:
Edit -> Preferences -> Folders -> Plug-ins

Looks like this:

And as ever, for those still confused, a video demo of the above Wink

  .gih brushes
Posted by: Pat625 - 09-24-2017, 07:22 PM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (5)

Is there a script to convert Photoshop tube brushes to .gih so I can use it in GIMP?  Every now and then I see one that I would like to use but it is Photoshop.  If no script, can it be done manually?
